Michael A. Hoffman II at the grave of astronomer William Brooks.

The inscription at the top of the tombstone is from Psalm 19:1: "The heavens declare the glory of God."

Like the ancient Greeks, Hoffman often has his eyes fixed on the evening sky. He is a lifelong fan of the obscure astronomer William Brooks (1844-1921) who in spite of working from a modest backyard observatory, made some of the great comet discoveries of the early 20th century. Hoffman lobbied to have the Brooks Observatory, which Mr. Hoffman has himself had the privilege to utilize, delcared a National Historic Monument.
